Gareth Blackstaffe-TurnerFitness Manager

I have been working in the fitness industry since 2007 by starting in commercial gyms, I moved across to a transformation bootcamp. This was then followed by freelance personal training and class instructing. Since having children I have moved back to commercial gyms and have now moved into the management team here at SSP, a place I have always wanted to work. Since being at SSP I have had the opportunity to work with and train some amazing people.

I enjoy strength training and Olympic lifting in the gym, and you may even catch me on the rower or ski erg for a Metcon. Outside of the gym I train and compete in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, which I started in 2018.

Before I tore my ACL in 2011, I represented Great Britain at AFL in 2 International Tournaments and England in the Home Nations cup. I was selected into the team of the tournament at the European Championships in 2010. I also played first team Rugby Union for Chobham and Guildford clubs and Rugby League for the Guildford Giants. Whilst at 6th form I had the opportunity to compete at Henley Royal Rowing Regatta twice.

My aim in the gym is to give our members the best experience they can have whilst in our facility.

I started training myself in the gym from the age of 16. At that time for me the gym was a very intimidating environment, after a couple of months of sticking to it I managed to feel comfortable in the gym and I have never looked back.

The gym is so much more for me than just a place to lift weights and get better physically. It has truly turned my life around. It’s my sanctuary a happy place where I can be myself. A place which helped me to realise that hard work and dedication pays off.

The desire to help people has always been a huge part of my personality and I take pride in helping others to discover what going to the gym can do for others, both physically and mentally.

I’ve been focusing on Strength and Hypertrophy training in my personal journey so if you ever have any questions on this or anything else fitness related come and find me, I’m always happy to help.

I’m always up for a good ‘chin wag’ no matter the subject.

See you around.

Guest Notice – Face Coverings

From Saturday 19th September, it will be essential for every person in Surrey Sports Park’s communal areas to wear a face covering. This is in-line with the campus-wide policy introduced by the University of Surrey.

The policy does not apply whilst taking part in sport and exercise and activity areas are exempt.

The University considers that the responsibility of wearing a face covering sits with individuals and we expect all our staff, students and public to adhere to this requirement where possible.

Please be mindful and respectful towards members of our community who, due to exceptional circumstances, may be unable to wear a face covering; their reasons may not be visible to others.

Thank you,

Surrey Sports Park
