1 boulder inducted/safety tested adult may directly supervise a maximum of 2 under 18s whilst climbing.

We offer a great range of climbing opportunities for 4-17 year olds; everything from a weekend casual session – ideal for beginners, to our NICAS courses which run for full school terms and educate young climbers in everything climbing related! For more information or to book a session/course please give us a call on 01483 683698.

Climbers should wear loose and comfortable clothing (we advise against skirts and dresses). Closed toe, secure footwear such as trainers must be worn.

We rent out climbing shoes, in case you don’t have any appropriate footwear. We recommend that watches and jewellery are removed and long hair is tied back. Loose items must be removed from pockets before climbing.

The Junior Sign-Off is for experienced 14-17-year-old climbers who wish to use the wall without a parent or instructor supervising them. It is a 1:1 assessment with an instructor lasting up to 60 minutes and costs £25. Children can be assessed for bouldering only, top rope climbing and / or lead climbing. During the assessment we will ask the child to demonstrate best practise in all areas of their chosen climbing discipline. A top tope assessment, for example, will include asking the child to correctly fit their own harness, tie in with a suitable climbing knot and belay a live climber. At the end of the assessment the instructor will decide if the climber has met the standards required to use the centre independently.

A second person is required to climb for the junior sign-off, but this person does not need to be experienced in climbing, knot-tying or belaying. Please note, children under 16 must have a parent / guardian present in the building during any independent climbing sessions.

To book a junior sign-off please call us on 01483 683689.

NICAS is a nationally-recognised scheme by the Association of British Climbing which helps to standardise the teaching and coaching of young climbers in an engaging manner.

The key aim is to provide a safe introduction to climbing for young people aged 7 years and up on artificial climbing structures. Those who are keen to progress through to the higher levels also start to look wider and learn more about the history, ethics and styles of both indoor and outdoor climbing.

There are approximately 240 centres that run the ABC’s schemes. Between them they have introduced over 120,000 young people to climbing. With logbooks to work through and certificates for achievement, the climber, parent and coach, can easily monitor and record skill development and progression through the sport.

The five levels of NICAS are:

  1. New Climber
An entry level aimed at novices that recognises their ability to climb safely under supervision.
  2. Foundation Climber
Aimed at promoting good practice in climbing and bouldering unsupervised on an artificial wall.
  3. Technical Climber
A more advanced top-roping and bouldering award that focusses on developing technique and movement skills. This is aimed at ensuring a candidate possesses the knowledge and skill to climb and belay safely at any climbing facility (whether under supervision or with back-up) and operate in a responsible manner. Achievement at this level is broadly equivalent to a pass at GCSE.
  4. Lead Climber
Concentrating on the skills required to lead climb proficiently. Aimed at developing a self-motivated climber who has a wide range of skills and has reached a high level of competence, with a desire to progress by identifying and setting goals.
  5. Advanced Climber
The top-level award that focuses on improving performance, a deeper understanding of climbing systems and the wider world of climbing, as well as experience of local and national competitions.

Our NICAS sessions run after-school, and at weekends. Levels 1-4 cost £162 for a 12-week term, whilst Level 5 costs £192. Sessions are 90 minutes long (with the exception of Level 5 at 2 hour-long sessions) and are weekly. Priority booking is given to students from the previous term, but we are always welcoming new climbers of all ages to join us!

All three English GCSE and A-level exam boards (AQA, Edexcel and OCR) recognise NICAS as a means to teach climbing, hence candidates who have passed Level 3 meet the GCSE requirements. The NICAS scheme can also be used towards Duke of Edinburgh, Scouting, A-Level and BTEC qualifications.

Spring Term 2021 Bookings for existing students will open on Monday 2nd November, and for new students on Tuesday 1st December.

Guest Notice – Face Coverings

From Saturday 19th September, it will be essential for every person in Surrey Sports Park’s communal areas to wear a face covering. This is in-line with the campus-wide policy introduced by the University of Surrey.

The policy does not apply whilst taking part in sport and exercise and activity areas are exempt.

The University considers that the responsibility of wearing a face covering sits with individuals and we expect all our staff, students and public to adhere to this requirement where possible.

Please be mindful and respectful towards members of our community who, due to exceptional circumstances, may be unable to wear a face covering; their reasons may not be visible to others.

Thank you,

Surrey Sports Park
