NICAS

NICAS is a nationally-recognised scheme by the Association of British Climbing which helps to standardise the teaching and coaching of young climbers in an engaging manner.

The key aim is to provide a safe introduction to climbing for young people aged 7 years and up on artificial climbing structures. Those who are keen to progress through to the higher levels also start to look wider and learn more about the history, ethics and styles of both indoor and outdoor climbing.

There are approximately 240 centres that run the ABC’s schemes. Between them they have introduced over 120,000 young people to climbing. With logbooks to work through and certificates for achievement, the climber, parent and coach, can easily monitor and record skill development and progression through the sport.

The five levels of NICAS are:

New Climber

An entry level aimed at novices that recognises their ability to climb safely under supervision.

Foundation Climber

Aimed at promoting good practice in climbing and bouldering unsupervised on an artificial wall.

Technical Climber

A more advanced top-roping and bouldering award that focusses on developing technique and movement skills. This is aimed at ensuring a candidate possesses the knowledge and skill to climb and belay safely at any climbing facility (whether under supervision or with back-up) and operate in a responsible manner. Achievement at this level is broadly equivalent to a pass at GCSE.

Lead Climber

Concentrating on the skills required to lead climb proficiently. Aimed at developing a self-motivated climber who has a wide range of skills and has reached a high level of competence, with a desire to progress by identifying and setting goals.

Advanced Climber

The top-level award that focuses on improving performance, a deeper understanding of climbing systems and the wider world of climbing, as well as experience of local and national competitions.

Our weekly NICAS sessions are run after school and on weekends. Levels 1-4 are 90-mins and cost £14.50 per session, whilst level 5 is 2 hours long and costs £17 per session. Payments for the term are taken at full before the start of term. Priority booking is given to students from the previous term, but we love to welcome new climbers of all ages.

All three English GCSE and A-level exam boards (AQA, Edexcel and OCR) recognise NICAS as a means to teach climbing, hence candidates who have passed Level 3 meet the GCSE requirements. The NICAS scheme can also be used towards Duke of Edinburgh, Scouting, A-Level and BTEC qualifications.

Bookings for NICAS can be taken over the phone. The dates for booking are as follows:

28/03/22 – 07/04/22 for current people on NICAS to rebook onto the same session

08/04/22 – 10/04/22 for current people on NICAS to either move up a level or move session within the same level

11/04/22 for new people to book onto any available spaces (waiting list depending)

Bookings for a term open in the first week of the preceding half-term. If you would like to register interest before this, give us a call and we can add you to our waiting list.

Guest Notice – Face Coverings

From Saturday 19th September, it will be essential for every person in Surrey Sports Park’s communal areas to wear a face covering. This is in-line with the campus-wide policy introduced by the University of Surrey.

The policy does not apply whilst taking part in sport and exercise and activity areas are exempt.

The University considers that the responsibility of wearing a face covering sits with individuals and we expect all our staff, students and public to adhere to this requirement where possible.

Please be mindful and respectful towards members of our community who, due to exceptional circumstances, may be unable to wear a face covering; their reasons may not be visible to others.

Thank you,

Surrey Sports Park
