How Swim Academy works

Following Swim England’s Learn to Swim programme, children can start lessons from 18 months old in our Parent & Child classes. From there they will progress to our Pre-School lessons aimed at children aged 3-4 years old. The next step up brings children into our After-School lessons where, starting at Stage 1a, children from the age of 4 have the opportunity to progress right through to Stage 10 and follow the pathway into competitive swimming with Guildford City Swimming Club. Teachers will track your child’s progress using tablets which is then updated to Home Portal at the end of each day.

Swim Assessments

In the assessment a teacher will spend 5-10 minutes with your child, matching them to the correct class for their swimming ability. Once the assessment is complete, we will sit down with you to confirm which class times and days we have available.

When are children’s swimming lessons?

All swimming lessons run on weekdays only.

Parent & Child run on Tuesday lunchtime & Friday morning. Pre-School run on Monday & Tuesday lunchtimes, Wednesday after school and Friday mornings. After-School lessons run Monday to Friday from 15:45 – 19:00. All lessons are either 30, 45 or 60 minutes long depending on your child’s ability.

Please email the Swim Academy Team at swimacademy@surrey.ac.uk for more information.

Home Portal

It is essential to sign your child up to Home Portal once they have been booked in for lessons. A free tool that lets you track your child’s progress, it also allows you to move your child to the next stage up. For more information about Home Portal, click here.

Private Lessons

Our Private Lessons are offered out to those in our group lessons who may be struggling with a certain aspect of their swimming which may be holding them back in their current stage. We have a very limited number of spaces so please email the Swim Academy team at swimacademy@surrey.ac.uk to check availability.

Is there anything else I need to know?

When you sign your child up for lessons, you will receive an automatic email with all the extra information you will need for your child’s first lesson and beyond.

Guest Notice – Face Coverings

From Saturday 19th September, it will be essential for every person in Surrey Sports Park’s communal areas to wear a face covering. This is in-line with the campus-wide policy introduced by the University of Surrey.

The policy does not apply whilst taking part in sport and exercise and activity areas are exempt.

The University considers that the responsibility of wearing a face covering sits with individuals and we expect all our staff, students and public to adhere to this requirement where possible.

Please be mindful and respectful towards members of our community who, due to exceptional circumstances, may be unable to wear a face covering; their reasons may not be visible to others.

Thank you,

Surrey Sports Park
