Sports Scholars Dive into Duck Tour
26 October 2012

The academic year started in an unusual way for the University of Surrey’s High Performance Athlete Support Scheme (HPASS) students earlier this month as they were treated to a trip on the famous London Duck Tours.
The visit was organised by Surrey graduate John Bigos, who owns the London franchise of Duck Tours and sponsors sports scholar and GB kayaker Jonny Tye.
The Duck Tour took the athletes around the beating heart of London, beginning at the towering London Eye before taking in historic sites including the Houses of Parliament, Downing Street and Westminster Abbey.
The tour continued onto Trafalgar Square and from there around Buckingham Palace before it dramatically splashed down onto the Thames, adding the unique edge that the Duck Tours have over similar guided tours.
The day was arranged to bring together all of the elite athletes, whose time at university is considerably different to other students due to their strict training regimes, and allow the handful of new scholars to meet and settle in.
The new comers to the University HPASS scheme include trampolinists Ross Abrahams, Amy Todd and Zara Hall; Hockey player Justin Hool, equestrian Serena Conway, Rugby League player Angus Peters, Joann Rolison for Taekwondo, rower Rob Sherry, American footballer Jake Simpson, runner Imogen Wosley and kayaker Paul Yates.
Full profiles for each of the Team Surrey Sports Scholars will be available in the near future. Keep check on the Surrey Sports Park website and Team Surrey Facebook page for regular updates on the athletes’ performances.
