London 2012 Update: GB women’s Basketball

19 July 2012

Following their training camp at Surrey Sports Park the Team GB women’s basketball squad have featured in a number of preparation fixtures across Europe to get ready for their first ever appearance at an Olympic Games.

The GB girls picked up their first win on the road with a 74-82 victory over Ukraine back at the beginning of June. Their second win came the following day to complete a successful weekend with a comfortable win over home nation Belgium.

Confident victories have also come against Canada, South Korea, Argentina, Czech Republic and Angola.

Last weekend Team GB took the runners-up spot in the Standard Life Game On 2012 tournament in Sheffield after beating France 74-67 on Sunday evening. The victory against nation seeded 8th in the world will give the girls confidence heading into London 2012, especially after strong performances from guards Jo Leedham and Natalie Stafford.

Team GB’s toughest test to date came last night at the MEN Arena in Manchester as they took on world number one and gold medal favourites USA. Despite a confident opening quarter with GB taking a 21-10 lead, the domination of the US side shone through, eventually running out 63-88 winners.

GB will begin their Olympic Games on Saturday 28th July against Australia in the Basketball Arena.
