Guildford MP joins Surrey Sports Park in Lacrosse World Cup Bid

14 May 2012

Conservative MP for Guildford and Under Secretary of State for Public Health Anne Milton has joined forces with Surrey Sports Park and the England Lacrosse Association (ELA) in a bid to host the 2017 Women’s Lacrosse World Cup.

The ELA launched their bid recently in Westminster with the help of the Minister for Sport and the Olympics, Hugh Robertson and an array of fellow MPs.

As the proposed venue for the event, Surrey Sports Park is playing a key role in the process alongside the ELA, having previously held lacrosse home internationals in April and the Women’s Rugby World Cup in 2010.

Anne Milton said ‘This bid gets my support as I know the value it will bring to the local community. Surrey Sports Park will do an excellent job hosting this tournament. I wish the English Lacrosse Association every success in this venture.’

Paul Blanchard, Chief Executive of Surrey Sports Park said: “Having hosted international lacrosse and other major sporting events such as the IRB Women’s Rugby World Cup in 2010 in the past Surrey Sports Park has the right credentials to welcome the 2017 Women’s Lacrosse World Cup to Guildford. It is an honour to have the support of Anne and we are a looking forward to a successful bidding process over the coming months.”

30 nations are expected to compete in the Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) Women’s World Lacrosse Cup in 2017 in comparison to the 16 countries that competed in Prague in 2009. The final decision will be made by the FIL in June this year.
