Battley Returns from South American Adventure

02 May 2012

Tom Battley, from the University of Surrey’s IT Services Department, has returned to the UK following an enjoyable six weeks in Peru teaching football to disadvantaged communities.

Working with the charity Project Peru, Tom coached a number of young people who are experiencing extreme poverty.

As well as passing on his football skills Battley also donated a large amount of sports equipment, some of which was provided by Surrey Sports Park, allowing children to continue enjoying sport beyond his stay.

Following his return Tom said: “The experience of being appreciated by those less fortunate than myself was amazing. Every child was eager to play football, no matter what age or gender.”

Tom is hoping to head back to Peru next January where he can continue with projects he started this year, which can be read about in his blog.

Before his next trip to Peru Tom will be taking on a Guildford-Paris sponsored bike in September in aid of Project Peru to raise funds for further coaching and donations to the community in Lima. Details of the event can be found on the Charity’s website.
