Team Surrey advance in BUCS Knock-out Competitions

Badminton, Rugby, Fencing and two Squash Clubs have progressed further in cup and trophy competitions following a strong afternoon of Team Surrey action last week.
Women’s Badminton 1st completely a confident 0-8 away win at Essex 2nd to take themselves through to the semi-finals of their cup, while their Squash counterparts also progressed but via a walkover after the School of African and Oriental Studies (SOAS) were unable to field a team. Men’s Squash 1st have set their focus on the BUCS Trophy for the remainder of the season after finishing their South Eastern 1A campaign, and have booked a place in the quarter-finals after beating Warwick 1st 2-3.
Possibly the most impressive cup result of the day came from the Men’s Rugby Union 1st fixture against Brunel 1st. Still unbeaten in both league and cup action, Team Surrey managed a 25-30 win away from home against a side from a superior league to set up a semi-final clash with St Marys.
These teams join Women’s Fencing 1st who received a quarter-final bye to reach the semi-finals of their cup competition in March.
Meanwhile several teams were also in league action last Wednesday. Men’s Football 2nd made the short journey to Reading 2nd and brought home a 2-3 victory, featuring an impressive 35 yard volley from Dan Graves. Women’s Fencing 1st also took to the road to take on Kent 1st, winning 112-122 despite losing a player to European action and their captain to injury.
The Equestrian Team bagged themselves a second consecutive competition 3rd place, with Marisa Wiszniewska taking 4th and Louise O’Calaghan 8th. The Men’s Volleyball Club were in weekend action and defeated Sussex 2-1.
Aside from Wednesday BUCS action the Team Surrey Sailing Club defeated Kingston at Brunel Sailing Club’s team racing event, The Badger, and the Equestrian our Rowing Team notched a tally of 12 BUCS points. The Lightweight 4 team came 5th in their competition, with the Lightweight Quads taking 5th in their top level BUCS event. The Intermediate 4 team were just short of an impressive 3rd place, but have still pre-qualified for the BUCS Regatta in May.
