Student Swaps Prize for Netball

25 January 2012

Purley student Sophie Clarke recently donated £100 to charity for the chance to train with Surrey Storm.

Netball mad Sophie, from Riddlesdown Collegiate, won the ‘Outstanding Contribution to Sport’ award at her school’s annual ceremony to celebrate sporting achievements.

Sophie, the first person to win the award, was recognised because of her community work in primary and junior schools, bringing sport to young people in her area, alongside her efforts as a sports ambassador for Croydon Borough. Excellent feedback from local head teachers and tutors was the reason for Sophie’s award.

As well as a trophy Sophie was also given £100 to spend on a sports-related experience, which she can then take back to the next awards ceremony and share with attendees.

Sophie decided that she would rather donate the money to charity, and selected Leuka- a charity dedicated to funding research into curing Leukaemia- after seeing a fellow netball player from the Croydon Netball League battle with Leukaemia.

In return for her generosity Surrey Storm offered Sophie the chance to train with the squad in December. The whole team were accommodating of Sophie and highly interested in her motivations to donate to the charity of her choice.

Sophie would like to thank all in involved in supporting her with this charitable gesture.
