England Crowned Champions as Fastnet comes to Surrey Sports Park

28 November 2011

England have become World Netball Series Champions following a sensational 33 – 26 victory over New Zealand.

Having finished fourth in the table, Anna Mayes’ side were, at least on paper, the outsiders for the title. However, a convincing win over Australia saw them breeze into the final and upset the odds to allow Jade Clarke to lift the trophy on behalf of her side.

Surrey Storm’s Pamela Cookey and Rachel Dunn were key in England’s success, making regular appearances throughout the three day tournament.

A full tournament round-up is available on the England Netball website.

The competition used the Fastnet variation of the sport which involves shorter games and goals worth multiple points. This style of play will hit Surrey Sports Park in the new year as the Cathedral City Lighter Fastnet Grand Prix comes to Guildford.

The competition, a first for top flight domestic netball, is split into a northern and a southern conference with four teams contesting each event, followed by a Finals Night comprising of the best four teams from the conference stages. Eight teams will compete for the title of best Fastnet team in the UK and will prove to be an excellent preview ahead of the Superleague season which commences in January.

Surrey Sports Park will host the Surrey Conference on Sunday 8th January, followed by the tournament final on Friday 13th January.

Tickets can be purchased now from the Surrey Sports Park Box Office. Full details are available on the England Netball website.
