Cup success for Team Surrey

10 November 2011

Cup fever hit Team Surrey yesterday as the majority of sports took part in their first round of BUCS tournament fixtures.

Netball 3rd continued their excellent form with their 4th win out of 4 matches in a comfortable 31-25 victory over Essex 2nd at Surrey Sports Park. The story was similar for Netball 2nd, who defeated Medway 2nd 45-13 on the home courts.

Men’s Football 3rd took on Roehampton 1st in a thrilling game, taking the home side to penalties after extra time finished 2-2. Team Surrey eventually ran out 3-4 winners.

Both the Men’s and Women’s Hockey 1st teams completed emphatic wins over their opposition. The Men hosted Medway 1st, winning 4-0, while the Women completely outplayed UCL 3rd away from home with a 0-11 victory.

Team Surrey Golf was not in cup action yesterday, but instead recorded their first league victory of the season against Portsmouth 1st, 3.5-2.5. Women’s Badminton 1st also played a league fixture at home to Chichester 1st, winning 7-1 in the process and taking top spot in their table. Men's Squash 1st travelled to Imperial 1st, dominating the rubber and winning 4-1.

Last weekend also saw a number of teams take part in independent tournaments and fixtures. Fencing took part in the County Individual Foil & Sabre Competition, where new sub coach Alex Bala and Becca Smethurst both won in the Sabre competitions. Rob Spencer also won 3rd in the Sabre, while Becca also managed a 3rd place in the Foil. There was success for the Sailing Clubs too, who took 3rd place at the Fleet Nationals.

A huge congratulations goes to the Rowing Team who entered Fours Head, the biggest fours rowing race in the country and gave the race of their lives, coming in the top 15% in the whole country. Congratulations to Phil Elton, Tom Mee, Ashley Epps and Nick Bright. The result was the highest ever achieved by Team Surrey Boat Club in any major national head race, especially impressive considering the number of ex-Olympians and GB U23 athletes competing!
