Strong start for Team Surrey
20 October 2011

Team Surrey have made a positive start in the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) Leagues, securing 12 wins in the first major Wednesday afternoon of fixtures.
While the majority of teams kicked off this week, our Men’s Rugby sides took to the field last Wednesday bagging themselves two wins on home turf, beating Brighton 2nd and Imperial College 3rd to set a positive standard going into week 2.
The successful start continued for Men's Rugby. With only the first team in action it was up to them to keep the 100% record, which they did in fine style with a 38-0 win over Chichester 2nd away from home. Adam Smith proved to be the star man with two tries and a drop kick to add to the points haul for Surrey.
Men’s Tennis 1st and 2nd teams also notched confident wins at Surrey Sports Park, beating Brunel 1st and Kingston 1st respectively to take a no loss record into week 3, as did Netball 1st and 3rd against Brighton 2nd and Imperial Med 5th.
Performance of the week goes to Beckie Manders from the Women’s Hockey 2nd team, whose hat trick sealed a 3-0 win for Team Surrey, all on her debut as captain for the squad.
Other notable results and performances:
• Men’s Football 2nd stole victory from Reading 2nd, with a Nick Norman goal ensuring that the points went Team Surrey’s way!
• Men’s Basketball 1st travelled down to Sussex and returned with a 61-54 victory.
• Women’s Badminton 1st fought out the day’s only draw in a 4-all battle at home to Portsmouth 1st.
These results put Surrey 53 in the BUCS table on 205, just behind Royal Holloway on 218 and Heriot-Watt on 221.
