A young Guildford City swimmer broke two personal bests whilst representing Team GB at the European Youth Olympic Festival in Turkey last month.

Emma Day, who swims with GCSC at Surrey Sports Park, finished fifth in the 200m Individual Medley and fourth in the 4x100m Freestyle relay, making the A in both finals.

Day swam for Team GB in Trabzon, Turkey between 23 and 30 July, competing in the European Youth Olympic Festival (EYOF) for the first time.

The EYOF, held every 2 years, is a multi-sport competition similar to the Olympics, and gives young athletes probably their first chance to complete internationally.

Team GB consisted of 64 athletes covering sports such as athletics, judo, tennis, gymnastics, cycling and swimming. Day was a member of the swim squad, consisting of 6 girls and 10 boys, with all the athletes staying at the athletes village in the University.

Day said, “This was my first international competition and I felt proud and privileged to be wearing Team GB kit. I was a little nervous because I was unsure of the standard of the opposition. All the swimmers supported each other, and seeing all the GB flags from the parents in the gallery made the atmosphere electric.

“It was a great experience to meet athletes from different sports and different countries. I met new people and made new friends. I would like to thank my coaches and training partners for helping me to have this opportunity, and to the coaches and team managers in Turkey who worked hard to enable us to perform at our best.”
