Egypt’s Ramy Ashour was crowned champion of the Australian Open squash tournament last weekend, beating England’s world number one Nick Matthew in a high quality 5 game match.
Two of squash’s top talents took to the court in the final, with Matthew twice taking a one game lead only for Ashour to take the last game and the title.
Talking on Twitter Matthew (@nickmatthew) provided his own assessment of the performance: “Played a great match today, can't be too critical. Combination of good stuff from Ramy & 1 poor game from me & the 5th ran away from me.”
England's Jenny Duncalf also reached the final of her draw, losing out to Malaysian Nicol David in straight games. Full reports of both finals can be found on the World Squash Federation website.
Matthew trained at Surrey Sports Park ahead of the tournament alongside fellow England Squash players Daryl Selby, Peter Barker, James Willstop and Adrian Grant. The World Team Championships in Germany are up next, starting this Sunday in Paderborn, and Surrey Sports Park will once again be following the progress of the England Squash players.
