USA Triathletes train at Surrey Sports Park

01 August 2011

A team of triathletes from the across the Atlantic are preparing ahead of their ITU World Championship series race in London this weekend.

The race, at the Olympic course in Hyde Park, will also serve as the selection competition for the London 2012 team, with the top two male and female American finishers automatically qualifying for next year’s Olympic Games.

Jarrod Shoemaker, who was in Beijing for the 2008 Olympics, recommended Surrey Sports Park to the team coaches after training in England last year: “We were in Teddington and I was looking for places to train locally. We started travelling down here [Surrey Sports Park] daily and I told the guys that we had to start training here- the pool is amazing.”

Female triathlete Gwen Jorgensen echoes the team’s hopes for not only this weekend but for London 2012 in general: “You won’t find anyone here that isn’t hopeful and ambitious. We stand a very good chance of success.”

The Dextro Energy Triathlon London takes place in Hyde Park this weekend, with live coverage on the BBC. Both elite and amateur triathletes will tackle the Serpentine and the progress of the team from USA will be covered on the Surrey Sports Park website.
