Guildford Swimmers go European
26 July 2011

Guildford City Swimming Club (GCSC) members take their strokes into European action.
Earlier this month Hannah Russell (pictured) brought two medals back from the IPC European Championships in Berlin, while National Youth and Senior Squad (NAYSS) member Emma Day has been called up for national duty.
Swimming in the S12 classification for swimmers with impaired vision Hannah did herself and her Club proud achieving a silver medal in a highly competitive 100m backstroke final as well as a bronze in the 100m fly. Solid performances in the 50m (5th), 100m (6th) and 400m (4th) freestyle events topped off what was an impressive meet for the young swimmer.
Steve Wadey lead coach of the National Age Group Squad (NAGS) said "Hannah is a great competitor and raises her game at the right time, it is fantastic to see her do so well, we are all very proud of her. It is very rewarding for Lee Spindlow (Assistant Coach of NAGS) and me to see her hard work pay off."
Emma’s selection to represent Great Britain at the European Youth Olympics in Trabzon, Turkey is an exciting opportunity and will put her up again some of the continent’s top young swimmers.
Chief Coach Richard Garfield and Lead Coach of NAYSS said "I am delighted that Emma has received the confirmation letter. I know Emma will give the competition everything. Emma always works hard and this will be a fantastic opportunity to put all that hard work into action."
The Youth Games are currently taking place and finish on July 30th.
GCSC also welcomed Commonwealth silver medallist Michael Jamieson to Surrey Sports Park in June after winning a competition with the Swimming Times magazine. Michael trained alongside the Club’s members, all of which were enthusiastic to learn from the experienced athlete, and was challenged to a 4 x 50m with the youngsters’ parents eagerly supporting from the sidelines. Full details of Michael’s visit can be read on the Guildford City Swimming Club website and photos from the day can be seen via our Facebook page.
