Team Singapore set to arrive in Surrey
21 July 2011

Team Singapore are set to arrive at Surrey Sports Park next week for the first of two pre-games training camps in Surrey ahead of the London 2012 Olympic Games.
Top Singaporean athletes, including reigning Olympic table tennis silver medallists Feng Tianwei, Li Jiawei, Wang Yuegu, Sun Beibei and Yu Mengyu, will train and stay at the University of Surrey owned facility for a three week period.
Shooting athletes will arrive from Tuesday 26 July and will be joined later by their badminton and table tennis counterparts on Sunday 31 July.
During the camp, the Singaporean badminton athletes will compete in the Yonex BWF World Badminton Championships at Wembley Arena in August.
The camps were organised by the Singapore Sports Council earlier this year and will also see Singapore's shooting athletes train at Bisley's National Shooting Centre in Surrey.
Around 40 athletes and officials from the three sports of badminton, shooting, and table tennis will be making the trip for this first camp, while the second camp will be held from July 14 to 24 next year and is likely to feature an increased number of athletes.
Paul Blanchard, the chief executive of Surrey Sports Park, said: "We look forward to welcoming Team Singapore for their first training camp here at Surrey Sports Park and we will ensure all the athletes have a successful stay and their training needs are fully met.”
Upon agreeing the camps in April, Bob Gambardella, the head of Singapore's Sports Development Group, said: "After careful evaluation, the Surrey Sports Park was chosen as it best met the training needs of Team Singapore. Their sport and supporting facilities are sports specific and are of international standards.”
At the Beijing 2008 Games, Team Singapore competed in six sports - athletics, badminton, shooting, sailing, swimming and table tennis.
