Game on 2011 heads to Surrey Sports Park

On Thursday 19 May 2011, the Standard Life GB women will descend on Surrey Sports Park for the start of Game On 2011, the ‘British Basketball Invitational Tournament’, culminating with the final day on Saturday 21st May.
The three day event will see the Standard Life GB women face three top international teams in the invitational tournament - Germany, Latvia and Cuba.
Surrey Sports Park has hosted the GB women previously when they played two test-games against Portugal and a EuroBasket qualifier versus the Ukraine last summer.
Paul Blanchard, Surrey Sports Park Chief Executive, is pleased to be hosting the national side once again, he said: “We are proud to be hosting the GB women here at Surrey Sports Park again for what we hope will be an exciting tournament of international basketball. We look forward to welcoming GB, Germany, Latvia and Cuba to our facilities and we can’t wait for the tournament to begin.”
Standard Life GB women’s head coach Tom Maher is looking forward to the competition his team will face in Surrey: "I couldn't be happier with the teams British Basketball has assembled to play in our tournament at Surrey Sports Park. Cuba is a traditional world basketball power and Latvia has a couple of players that are legitimate stars of the women's game. Furthermore playing Germany gives us the opportunity to measure our progress from last year".
The Game On 2011 tournament in Surrey will form part of the Standard Life GB women’s team’s preparations for EuroBasket Women 2011 which tips off in Poland on 16 June 2011. Last summer saw the women qualify top of their group in the EuroBasket qualifying rounds where they defeated Game On 2011 opponents, Germany, so they will be looking to do the same again when they return to Surrey.
Standard Life GB player Jo Leedham added: “I am excited to be back playing in Surrey and for us to be able to host our first four nation tournament. I think it is great for British Basketball to be able to host such an event, with some quality teams coming over to compete. We are very fortunate to be at Surrey Sports Park once again as we are familiar with the site and facilities.”
Tournament schedule:
This tournament forms an important part of the preparations for June's EuroBasket Women, and it will be the first opportunity to see a Standard Life GB team in action since FIBA's momentous confirmation of our participation in the 2012 Olympics.
