Rugby World Cup 2015
Surrey Sports Park is proud to have been an official Team Base for Rugby World Cup 2015 (RWC 2015), playing host to Italy & Ireland, as well as South Africa, Scotland, Georgia, Fiji and Canada.
England Rugby 2015, the Organising Committee for RWC 2015, announced the approved list of 41 Team Bases in August 2014, with Surrey Sports Park being selected as the official Team Base for Italy and Ireland.
The Team Base consisted of world-class grass pitches, artificial 3G pitches, a 50m 8-lane swimming pool, the newly refurbished Health & Fitness Centre, dedicated strength and conditioning studio and much more. The facilities had to meet international team training standards and be located on one site or within close proximity of one another. Match venue locations were also taken into account as part of the selection programme.
Surrey Sports Park was also selected to host teams during the knockout stages of the Tournament; the quarter-finals and semi-finals. It then went on to be the training base for South Africa before their Bronze Final clash with Argentina.
The search for Team Bases was launched via an open tender process in May 2013 and over 90 bids from across the country and in Wales were received. Surrey Sports Park worked closely with England Rugby 2015 to facilitate detailed site visits and liaison with the teams prior to confirmation of its status as an official Team Base for Rugby World Cup 2015. With Italy and Ireland based in Surrey Sports Park and other teams utilising the facilities, this gave Guildford and Surrey the opportunity to be part of the world’s third largest sporting event and celebration of rugby.
